Here at The Ian & Clare Mattioli Charitable Trust we pride ourselves on our commitment to making a real difference in the lives of those who need it most.
Recently, thanks to the generosity of the Mattioli Family, we were able to fund vital surgery for Rory, one of two incredible twin brothers, Rory and Ronnie, who were both diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy and severe visual impairments at 11 months old. At the time of diagnosis, the future was uncertain for both boys and it was likely neither of them would be able to sit or walk unaided.
More recently it was agreed Rory would be a good candidate for a procedure which would reduce the spasticity (tightness) in his legs, which was severely impacting his mobility and everyday activities. His family faced significant challenges, from difficulties in basic care to limitations in his independence. The Mattioli Trust happily agreed to fun the surgery, which took place at Alderhey Children's Hospital in Liverpool in January. Now, following the surgery, we are thrilled to share an update from his family about his incredible progress.

A Remarkable Transformation
“Rory’s surgery went even better than expected, and the impact has been truly life-changing.”
His family shared that they hadn’t realised just how much tightness was affecting him until after the procedure. Now, for the first time, they can comfortably change his nappy, and he can wrap his legs around them when being picked up—something that was impossible before.
The surgeon removed 75% of Rory’s spasticity, leaving just enough to help with stability. Despite the significant change, Rory has adapted remarkably well. His doctors initially estimated that it could take up to six months for him to start walking again with his walker, but incredibly, he has already taken his first steps! His physiotherapist was amazed by his rapid progress, and he will now begin an intensive block of therapy to build his strength and confidence even further.
A Future Full of Possibilities
Perhaps the most heartwarming news of all is Rory’s own words:
"My legs feel so much better."
His family is overjoyed, knowing that this surgery has given him a new lease on life. With continued physiotherapy and support, they are confident that he will gain more independence in the years to come.
Rory’s journey is a testament to the power of community, generosity, and hope. His family has expressed immense gratitude to the family who made this possible, saying:
"The Mattioli Trust has changed all of our lives and made our dreams come true. We are ever so grateful for this opportunity. Thank you again for EVERYTHING!"
Proud to Make a Difference
