The Ian & Clare Mattioli Charitable Trust is proud to support innovative environmental work on Speyside, helping communities tackle the ongoing challenge of invasive species management along more than 60km of riverbank.

Working alongside dedicated volunteers, local land managers and environmental specialists, the project is combining practical conservation with cutting-edge approaches to reduce the impact of giant hogweed and Japanese knotweed across some of the area’s most heavily affected sites.

The work has seen significant progress over the last two years, with large knotweed stands now substantially reduced and only smaller pockets remaining in several key areas. Drone technology is being used to survey sites, monitor year-on-year progress and identify hidden infestations, while custom-built equipment and specialist vegetation clearance machinery are helping teams access difficult terrain safely and efficiently.

The project also highlights the power of collaboration, with volunteers and local communities contributing time, skills and expertise to support the long-term restoration of these important river environments.

As well as improving biodiversity and protecting native ecosystems, the programme is helping create safer and more accessible landscapes for future generations.

The Trust remains committed to supporting projects that deliver lasting environmental and community impact through innovation, partnership and practical action.
